Bento Cartridges is a free resource published on the Figma Community: a collection of bento-style widgets designed as Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color cartridges. The idea is simple: give designers a set of nostalgic pieces ready to drop into any mockup and add a retro touch with zero effort.
The idea
The bento style was everywhere, but almost always the same: clean, neutral grids. I wanted to give it a spin with a highly recognizable cultural reference — Game Boy cartridges — to make something eye-catching that was still reusable.
What I designed
- A collection of cartridge-style widgets inspired by Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color, with their signature labels, colors and shapes.
- Customizable pieces meant to fit into different projects, from apps to landing pages.
- A file published on the Figma Community, ready to duplicate and use.
Why it works
The detail is what matters: what makes these widgets connect is fidelity to the original cartridges — the proportions, the label, the sheen of the plastic. That care turns a decorative element into something people recognize instantly and want to use.
Results
- A free, reusable resource within the Figma community.
- An exercise in how a well-executed nostalgic reference can set a design system apart.
